The parties and the patent
The proceeding is Shenzhen Torras Technology Co., Ltd. v. Rokform IP, LLC, IPR2027-00003. The petitioners are Shenzhen Torras Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Lechuang Tiancheng Technology Co., Ltd., Shenzhen Ruixin Digital Technology Co, Ltd., and Shanghai Kuke Network Technology Co., Ltd. Rokform's mandatory notices identify the patent owner as Rokform IP LLC and name Rokform LLC as an additional real party in interest. U.S. Patent 11,775,019, Case and Mount System for Handheld Electronic Device, issued October 3, 2023, from an application filed December 10, 2020. It claims priority through a chain of continuations to an application filed August 23, 2012, and to provisional applications filed January 12 and May 31, 2012.
What the challenged claims cover
Claim 9 covers a mountable case for a handheld electronic device whose rear wall and sidewall are a unitary structure, with an exterior-facing member removably received in the rear wall. The exterior-facing member has an indentation, facing the rear wall, that holds at least one magnet, and the rear wall and the exterior-facing member fully enclose the magnet. Claim 10 adds that the exterior-facing member is a non-slip member. Claim 11 adds that the non-slip member has a frictional gripping exterior surface that enhances frictional engagement of the case with a surface on which the case is placed. The petition says the unitary-structure and fully-enclosed-magnet limitations were added by amendment during prosecution in response to prior art rejections.
The six grounds
Ground 1 argues that claim 9 is not entitled to the August 23, 2012 filing date because the 2012 application and the two provisionals describe only a non-slip member, not any generic exterior-facing member, and that claim 9 is therefore anticipated under 35 U.S.C. 102 by U.S. Publication 2013/0181584, the July 18, 2013 publication of that 2012 application. Grounds 2 to 4 argue that claim 9 is obvious under 35 U.S.C. 103 over U.S. Publication 2011/0192857, over U.S. Publication 2011/0252609, and over the two combined. Ground 5 argues that claims 10 and 11 are obvious over 2011/0192857 alone or combined with 2011/0252609. Ground 6 argues that claims 9 to 11 are obvious over Korean Publication KR101020434B1 in view of French Publication FR2901085A1. The petition relies on a technical expert's declaration and says none of the prior art in its grounds was considered during prosecution. An IPR may raise only patents and printed publications under 35 U.S.C. 102 and 103, 35 U.S.C. 311(b).
The Texas cases and discretionary denial
The petition identifies the related litigation as Rokform LLC v. Shenzhen Torras Technology Co., Ltd., Nos. 2:26-cv-00052-JRG (lead case) and 2:26-cv-00050-JRG (E.D. Tex.), filed January 22, 2026. The consolidated amended complaint in those cases, filed June 18, 2026 and attached to the petition as an exhibit, asserts the '019 patent and U.S. Patent 12,656,835 against all four petitioners and alleges infringement of at least claim 9 of the '019 patent. The petition argues against discretionary denial because, it says, the parties' investment in the litigation has been relatively minimal, all defendants in the litigation are petitioners, and the petitioners will offer a Sotera stipulation that, if trial is instituted, they will not raise in district court any ground that they raised or reasonably could have raised in the petition. Rokform's mandatory notices, filed October 23, 2026, list the Texas cases, the petitioners' October 10, 2026 petitions against the '835 patent, IPR2027-00012 and PGR2027-00004, and a pending related application, No. 19/695,546.
What to watch next
The Board's notice of October 13, 2026 accorded the petition a filing date of October 2, 2026. Under the USPTO's interim Director discretionary process, Rokform may file a brief requesting discretionary denial within two months of that notice, and the petitioners may file an opposition within three months of it. Rokform's preliminary response is due no later than three months after the notice, 37 CFR 42.107(b). Watch for those filings, the institution decision, and any motion to stay the Texas cases.
