What the patent covers
U.S. Patent 10,107,628, titled Method and Apparatus for Navigating on Artistic Maps, issued October 23, 2018. Claim 1 covers a navigation method in which a portable computing device with navigation capability downloads an artistic map that is non-linearly scaled, with objects shown exaggerated so a user can select one, while navigation runs on a geographical map that is not displayed. The device receives the user's selection, transforms the coordinates of a point on the selected object into a latitude and longitude on the geographical map, detects its current location, determines a direction to the selected object, and shows that direction on the artistic map. (U.S. Patent 10,107,628 claim 1; Compl. paras. 12 to 16.)
What the lawsuit alleges
Infogation, a Texas corporation, alleges it owns the '628 Patent by assignment. It alleges, on information and belief, that Mappedin, which it describes as a Canadian company based in Waterloo, Ontario, makes, uses, offers, sells, licenses, and supports Mappedin Navigation, Mappedin Web and Mobile SDKs, Blue Dot, and customer applications built on them, and that these products practice at least claims 1, 4 to 8, and 11 to 18. Count I pleads direct infringement and induced infringement by customers and users. Venue is pleaded under the rule for foreign defendants. (Compl. paras. 1 to 32; Count I.)
